Reflection on my NHD Process

NHD was ended since last Friday, I think my partner and I had done a really good job compare to the first year.

During doing the NHD, I had learned a lot from my project, we researched on our topic on different sources, assemble information, and we rewrote them in our own words, I was so glad that I was able to understand what the articles or those information were wrote about, so I don't need to research on a Chinese website. By the time passed, I became to be more awared about my individual --Shiing Shen Chern, who was a Chinese -American mathematician, a large part of modern algebraic geometry would not exist without Chern classes.

The most challenged work I faced was that we couldn't understand the equation of Chern Classes, because of the language problem, the definition of those classes were in a higher English level for both of us to understand, and use them, so we had done a lot works on these things, but still couldn't find anything.

We chose Shiing-Shen Chern as our NHD Project topic, because he was a Chinese-American Mathematician, and we realize that not anyone like us doing a topic like this one, most people doing a topic like the World War II or the Cold Warm, etc. but my partner and I want to do a different and special one. Beside that, we are interesting at how a Chinese American Mathematician make a big improved in mathematic field. And also Mrs. Gold said that we two are good at math, and maybe this will be a good topic for us to work at.

To conduct our research, we divide the information into primary and secondary sources, this will be easy way for us to realize the sources, and beside that, we had fought some picture of Chern's as a primary source, a brief biography of his life, and the awards he had been given, we also find his great efforts to the ge`ometric field. In Chern's life, he had made three major decisions which affected his whole life forever. Chern entered the Nankai University at aged 15, later he eared a chance to study abroad to go to Paris, and then, he accepted the invitation to visit the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). Collect the information or sources, and separated them into different section by his life timeline in order, and research my topic on website or go to library to find a book about him, use different sources will be useful for us to do our project.


We are very interesting in math history, when we make research Chinese mathematician, we saw Chern's name on the research, we try to know more about him, after that we know he came to America as a immigrate and he is a Chinese-American mathematician, also he effect the math history of American, what he invented theory is the newest and really originality, this is the reason why we are interesting in him. And we choose to do our project as an exhibit, because we think exhibit can show the clear information and we can design the exhibit board look more pretty. Last year, my partner and I doing the documentary, I think it was hard for me to do, and I became to recognized that the documentary couldn’t give an clear information, the mean of the words, and while we conduct the documentary, all we need just the picture, and video, it just has a few words on the screen. And doing exhibit, we can design the board as what we wanted, we want our project be an artistic production and can teach people the knowledge we want them to know about our topic.

My topic about Chern is related to the NHD theme, because he was a Chinese-American, and he had made a improvement in mathematical field, he contributed his whole life in math, if his theory and some mathematical classes were not exist, then we won’t find our answers for the problems, and we won’t have a such better life. Math is related to science, and science is related to our life, everything around us has a relationship between each other.
